At 18, Doreen Bance began her
training in loudspeaker design and manufacture at Goodmans Industries, one of the foremost
speaker manufactures of the time. She was given firm practical grounding in speaker
assembly, with training in all the separate operations involved in the manufacturing
process.
Doreen then worked in
the laboratory, on prototype vibrating systems, constructing units which were later
introduced on to the production line. With a background such as this, is is not
surprising that loudspeakers were to become her career.
Before she was married, Doreen worked also in other industries - Tyresoles laboratories at Wembley, for Dunlop and for Napier at Acton. This varied industrial experience, particularly a year spent in the statistical department at Dunlop, stood her in good stead in the ensuing thirty years as Director, Production Manager and Company Director at E.J.Jordan Ltd.
She founded BANDOR (BANce DOReen) in 1984 after developing the first miniature spun and anodised aluminium cone which is at the heart of the 50mm driver unit.
Production problems have been those which beset all small scale manufacturers - chiefly difficulty in finding suppliers for small quantities of components. Even so, manufacture of the 50mm units has steadily increased and now100mm, 150mm and 300mm units are also on the production line.
With more than 36 years experience. Doreen is convinced that loudspeaker design is more of an art than a science: the units which she has designed and developed reflect her experience and appreciation of detail, which, when combined, produce unique and successful high quality loudspeakers.
